Use of spices and herbs for the Christmas holidays

Use of spices and herbs for the Christmas holidays

Using spices and herbs in your dishes and for decoration is a wonderful way to fill the festive season with warmth, aroma and taste.

Here are some ideas on how to use spices and herbs in the Christmas and New Year celebrations:

In cooking:

Let's start with the spices that are one of the most essential for the Christmas and New Year holidays and these are Cinnamon, Cloves, Vanilla and baking powder with which we use to make the wonderful Vasilopita, the delicious melomacarona (is an egg-shaped Greek dessert made mainly from flour, olive oil, and honey) and the fluffy Kourabiedes ( Greek Xmas Butter Cookies with Almonds).

Also Mastic, Cardamom and Mahaleb, for those who wish to make delicious tsourekia (Tsoureki is a Greek holiday sweet bread that is made by Greeks during Christmas and Easter).

Let's look at them one by one.

Cinnamon: This warm and sweet spice is often associated with Christmas. It is used in desserts such as Cinnamon rolls, gingerbread cookies, hot drinks, hot chocolate and mulled wine.

(Cinnamon extract, Ceylon cinnamon, Indonesian cinnamon).

Nutmeg: Nutmeg adds a warm, nutty flavor and is commonly used in eggnog, fruit pies, custards. It is also a key ingredient in pumpkin pie and many holiday baked goods.

Cloves: With their strong, sweet and slightly bitter flavor, cloves are used in icing, hot cider and desserts such as gingerbread and fruitcake. Whole cloves are often added to tea or citrus for aromatic garnish.

Ginger: Ground ginger adds a spicy and warm flavor to gingerbread cookies, cakes and other holiday treats. It also adds a spicy note to savory dishes, such as glazed carrots or roasted vegetables.

Cardamom: This aromatic spice adds a sweet and floral note to baked goods, drinks, coffee and holiday treats. Essential ingredient for your buns.

Allspice: With flavors reminiscent of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg combined, allspice is used in stews, fruitcakes, puddings and drinks.

Star anise: Star anise is used in mulled wine, cider and desserts. Star anise provides a licorice-like flavor and a decorative touch.

Vanilla: Essential in many Christmas desserts such as sugar cookies, cakes and puddings. Vanilla extract enhances the overall sweetness of a dish and elevates its aroma.

(Vanilla extract 1.2 - Vanilla stick 1.2 - vanilla powder 1.2).

Rosemary: It is an aromatic herb that goes well with grilled meats, potatoes and bread. Rosemary sprigs can also be used for festive garnishes.

Thyme: Another savory herb that pairs well with roasted meats and vegetables, thyme can add depth to holiday dishes.

Sage: With its earthy and slightly peppery flavor that enhances the overall flavor of the dish, sage is commonly used in stuffing for Christmas Poultry

Peppermint: Mint extract or dried for mint-flavored candies and treats, peppermint is popular in desserts such as candies, cookies, and hot chocolate.

(Mint leaf - wild Mint - Mint essential oil).

Blueberries: Used in savory dishes, whole or as a sauce, especially with grilled meats and game. Of course also in sweets such as cakes, cookies, etc.

Paprika: Smoked or sweet paprika for aromatic, earthy flavor in various dishes.

Baking in the oven:

Add ground Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Cloves to cookie dough, cakes and pie fillings.

Incorporate fresh or dried herbs like Rosemary or Thyme into savory baked goods like bread or crackers.

Herb-infused butter:

Make butter infused with herbs, Sage or Rosemary to spread on rolls or use in mashed potatoes.

Savory dishes:

Use herbs like Thyme and Sage in stuffing, roasted vegetables and meat dishes.

Sprinkle a pinch of Cinnamon or Nutmeg on sweet potatoes or winter squash.

Sauces:

Enhance your sauces with orange zest, Cinnamon or a hint of ginger for extra flavor.

Snack:

Toss in mixed nuts, a blend of spices like Cinnamon, Nutmeg and a dash of cayenne for a festive snack.

Grilled with herbs:

Create a wonderful herb blend for your holiday roast using Rosemary, Thyme, garlic and olive oil.

In drinks:

Drinks:

Create a festive beverage station with mulled cider, mulled wine or flavored teas. Use Cinnamon sticks, Cloves and orange slices for garnish.

In decorations:

Potpourri with herbs and spices:

Create a potpourri using dried citrus peels, Cinnamon sticks, Cloves and dried herbs. Place it in bowls throughout your home.

Garlands and Wreaths:

Use dried herbs such as Rosemary or bay leaves in garlands and wreaths.

Ornaments with Cinnamon sticks:

Tie bundles of Cinnamon sticks with holiday ribbons and use them as ornaments on your Christmas tree.

Bouquet of herbs:

Combine herbs such as Rosemary, Thyme and Sage together to create aromatic herb bouquets. Place them in jars.

Edible decorations:

Use whole spices like Star anise or Cinnamon sticks as decorations on wrapped gifts or as table decorations.

In aromatics:

Aroma in the space:

Nail Cloves to whole oranges, not only do they look great but they will also add a wonderful aroma to your space.

Herbal Infused Candles:

Use dried herbs or spices in homemade candles for a decorative and aromatic touch.

Remember to be creative and have fun experimenting with different combinations of herbs and spices. Not only will your home smell wonderful, but the flavors on your plates will also awaken the festive spirit of Christmas.
