Serenoa is an American palm tree and its ripe fruit has been used by the Indians as a tonic dating back at least to the Mayan era.

They still used the fruits of this plant to treat urinary problems and breast problems in women.

Its name comes from the shape of the spiny stalk (saw-toothed) found at the base of each leaf.

It is endemic to the subtropical southeastern United States, typically along the southern Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains and Sand Hills. It grows in clumps or dense thickets in sandy coastal areas and as vegetation in pines.

Treatment regimens and preparations usually contain an extract obtained from the fruits of the palm tree.

Traditionally, the Native American Seminole tribe ate serenoa berries to ease the urinary system and in cases of reproductive problems.

It is rich in fatty acids, phytosterols and tannins. The high levels of β-sitosterol contained in it give this herb estrogenic properties and for this reason it is useful for people with excessive secretion of male hormones, also to help reduce the growth of cancer cells in the prostate.

Serenoa offers a safe and effective action against the problems associated with prostate hypertrophy, such as reducing the frequency of frequent urination and nocturnal enuresis, improving the initiation of urination and good emptying of the bladder, reducing pain, normal urine flow.

It is also valuable for all digestive and urinary tract infections.

Serenoa affects the secretion of hormones such as progesterone, estrogen and testosterone.

Testosterone plays an important role in both men and women. It is associated with fertility because it affects the production of sperm and eggs.

In addition to inhibiting the action of the estrogen receptor, it increases the level of testosterone, which is known to be associated with the development of the muscular system.

As men age, it is natural for them to lose some of their hair. This natural process occurs because of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a byproduct of the breakdown of testosterone.

It also contributes to the treatment of hereditary androgenetic alopecia, especially in men, as well as to the reduction of hair loss.

Side effects :

Saw palmetto contains tannic acids, which have the property of complexing with iron molecules and reducing its bioavailability. People with a history of anemia should be especially careful when taking it .or by people taking birth control pills, as their effectiveness may be reduced.

Taking it is contraindicated for children, pregnant or lactating women as well as for people taking anticoagulant treatment, as taking saw palmetto affects blood clotting.
