Hypericum was recommended by Hippocrates for "nervous agitation" - it has a 2,000 year history of folk use for anxiety, sleep disorders and depression.

At the time of the Crusades, it was used as an herb for wounds as it was considered a panacea.

Antidepressant

Its most famous use is as a medication for mild to moderate depression. It is perhaps the most studied herb for this reason, with literally thousands of studies and clinical trials conducted to evaluate its usefulness as an antidepressant.

It also lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol and boosts the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural brain tranquilizer.

For anxiety, nervousness, irritability or psychological problems related to menopause or premenstrual syndrome.

For overexertion that leads to exhaustion and depression.

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)

This type of depression occurs only in winter due to lack of sunlight. Research has found the use of this herb to be one of the most effective treatments for SAD.

Other uses

In wounds, bumps and bruises.

For minor burns, sunburn, cuts, abrasions, irritated joints and in areas with tendinitis, but also for nerve pain.

It is also astringent, analgesic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, sedative, nervous system tonic.

Symptoms may appear, such as fatigue, upset stomach, headaches.

It can make the skin more sensitive to light. Fair-skinned people should avoid exposure to strong sunlight and other sources of UV light, such as tanning beds. It should not be taken with: the birth control pill, anti-seizure treatments, 5-htp and a number of other medicines, including antidepressants.
