Flaxseed oil benefits

1) Heart

In a study of 56 participants, a daily supplement of 3 grams of ALA (from flaxseed supplements) increased EPA levels in the blood. These levels increased by 60% after 12 weeks compared with the placebo group, which did not show an increase in EPA

In the human body, flaxseed ALA is partially metabolized to EPA and DHA. The FDA recently approved health claims that omega-3 fatty acids (especially EPA and DHA) may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

Cholesterol

In a review of 28 studies, the authors suggested that flaxseed slightly reduced the amount of total and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood.

12 months of high flaxseed diet also reduced LDL and total cholesterol in 110 patients with heart disease.

2) Skin Health

Nutritional ALA deficiency is associated with dry and uncomfortable skin and poor skin quality in humans. Flaxseed is rich in ALA and improves skin sensitivity and hydration.

In another study of 45 women, taking flaxseed for 12 weeks reduced redness and roughness of the skin.

Eczema is a common skin disorder with dry, uncomfortable and red skin. Flaxseed lowers saturated fatty acid levels, which can reduce rash areas and help remove irregular skin.

It is high in ALA, which reduced inflammation of skin cells and promoted regenerative functions in a cell study.

Flaxseed also reduces inflammation of skin cells and increases repair in skin cells.

3) Bowel Health

Flaxseed is believed to help with constipation.

In a study of 50 patients, daily supplementation with 4 mL of flaxseed helped relieve constipation.

Flaxseed also relieved the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) by reducing inflammation in a pilot study of 40 patients with IBS.

4) Brain Health

In a study of 30 healthy adults, ALA supplements increased BDNF levels. BDNF is a vital growth factor for neurons. The authors of this study concluded that ALA is worth studying in the context of stroke recovery.

In a study of 51 patients with bipolar disorder, flaxseed supplements helped improve their mood.

Daily consumption of flaxseed has helped prevent diabetes-related brain dysfunction in diabetic rats. Flaxseed stopped oxidative stress, thus protecting brain cells.

Flaxseed supplementation significantly reduced lead and nitrous oxide levels. This helps prevent the formation of free radicals and stops oxidative damage.

As with many of the potential benefits of flaxseed, many more human trials are needed.

Cancer Research

Flaxseed contains flaxseed, a family of compounds that have potential anti-cancer and antioxidant effects. This complex family increases the shelf life of flaxseed in storage. It probably does the same thing in the human body, providing powerful antioxidant properties that reduce the growth rate of cancer cells.

Flaxseed is also a rich source of dietary lignans, which reduce the risk of breast cancer and the growth of lung cancer cells.

Alpha-linolenic acid slows down the growth of cancer cells and kills cancer cells.

In experiments, flaxseed supplementation reduced the formation of lung tumors and prevented the formation of breast cancer cells .

Side effects

Higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids are associated with slightly longer bleeding times and slower clotting times. However, there are no documented cases of bleeding problems, even at high omega-3 levels and when taken with blood thinners.

During the first intake of flaxseed, some adults taking more than 6 grams a day experienced discomfort in the stomach and intestines.

In addition, some people may be allergic to flaxseed.

Flaxseed contains small amounts of cyanogenic glycosides. In typical dietary quantities, however, flaxseed does not produce enough thiocyanate (a precursor of cyanide) to be dangerous.
