The plane tree is a very large, fast-growing and long-lived deciduous tree species, belonging to the family Platanoids.

The native trees of the eastern plane tree are found in the Eurasian area, specifically from the Balkans to Iran. Other sources point to the Iberian Peninsula in the west and the Himalayas in the east.

The eastern plane tree is often found near rivers along with other trees, such as birches, willows and poplars. However, it can also survive in dry soils.

Its flowers and fruits are spherical in shape and are in groups of two or six.

The fruit is a small conical achene with hair at its base, on a long convex peduncle. The achenes form spherical cones.

It is found in most Greek villages which have one or more plane trees in the main square.
