The tea that blooms in water
Blooming tea consists of a bunch of dried tea leaves wrapped around one or more dried flowers.
This is made by tying the tea leaves and flowers together into a bulb and then leaving them to dry.
When immersed in water, the bundle expands and unfolds in a process that mimics a blooming flower, and from within the flowers emerge as the centerpiece.
Its origin is usually from the Yunnan province of China.
Flowers commonly used to make Blooming tea are red amaranth, chrysanthemum, jasmine, lily, hibiscus and osmanthus.
Flower tea in its current form was developed in China in the 1980s and first became popular in Western countries in the early 2000s.
Some sources state that the general concept of piled tea leaves is several centuries old.
Flowering tea is generally served in containers made of glass or similar transparent materials so that the effect of flowering can be seen.
They can usually be reused two or three times without the tea becoming bitter.
