Mastic has been cultivated for at least 2,500 years in Greece. The first mention of real "tears" of mastic was made by Hippocrates. Hippocrates used mastic to prevent digestive problems, colds and to freshen the breath.
According to the tradition of Chios, the skin began to weep when Saint Isidore was martyred by the Romans, around 250 AD. The Romans chased Saint Isidore because he was a Christian. The Saint, in order to escape, fled near Mesta. At that moment a white horse appeared with which he reached the southern villages of Chios because he could not take it anymore after he had been seriously injured. Then he sat down under a skin. The skin felt sorry for him for his torture and he cried. His tears smelled and then the tear of Saint Isidore was created, which we still call mastic.
Many tried to plant it in their place but their efforts proved in vain as the spruce gives mastic only in certain areas, in particular, from all over the world it thrives only in Chios and specifically on the south side of the island.

Chios mastic is a 100% natural product.
Some pieces are bigger and some smaller.
Some pieces are a little softer and some a little harder.
In winter, mastic is usually harder due to lower temperatures, while in summer it is soft, especially if it is very hot, it reaches the point of sticking, so it is recommended to store it in the refrigerator.
If it sticks to you, put it in the freezer for about 1 hour, and use a mortar or blender to dust it again. Mastic no matter how many times it clots or even if it becomes a body, it does not lose any of its healing properties!
.Also small pieces are usually a little harder than larger ones as they "dry out" and harden faster than large pieces.
Small pieces of mastic are more suitable for rubbing powder because they are drier, and we usually use it in cooking and confectionery, and larger pieces are more suitable for chewing because they are generally softer.

Chewing
Pick a small piece of mastic and chew it. If it is soft, fill the amount you will chew with a harder one. If it is hard, choose a softer one to fill the required amount that you want to chew. Keep in mind that mastic after a little chewing softens as it is warmed by the temperature of the mouth. After two or three attempts, the golden section will be easily found.
Chewing Chios mastic stimulates the function of the salivary glands and increases the secretion of saliva, which contributes in self-cleaning of the mouth. Its unique composition makes it a preventive and, possibly, anti-caries remedy.
A very common bacterium of the oral cavity is Streptococcus mutans, which can, when it colonizes the tooth surface, begin its degradation with the end result of the known caries.
In addition, its antimicrobial action helps to neutralize microorganisms that cause dental plaque formation and bad breath.
For treatment there are two alternatives:
A. Use (swallow) the small mastic tears as they are.
B. You can rub natural mastic powder or buy ready-made mastic powder.
Swallowing either powder or small pieces of mastic has the same beneficial effect.
The difference is that the dust will act faster.
If you want to rub your own mastic, prefer the small mastic tears.
Put it in the freezer for about 1 hour and then put a small amount of mastic in a blender to make it powder.
For very small quantities you can also use a mortar to break it into small pieces of mastic.
Mastic helps:
diabetics, cholesterol sufferers, stomachache, reflux (heartburn / stomach upset), stomach ulcer, duodenal ulcer. Increases the body's natural defenses and soothes stomach aches.
Usual dosage *
Every morning, 30-60 minutes before breakfast, swallow half a teaspoon of mastic powder.
You can also put the required amount of powder on your tongue and drink a few sips of water immediately afterwards. In severe cases, the same dose can be repeated at night.
Some people say that they put mastic tears in a bottle of water and leave it for 2-3 days. Then they drink the mastic water as they would drink the daily dose of water and how it helps them. But because mastic does not dissolve in water, the benefits are small.
