Zeolites are a group of crystalline, hydrated alkali-silicate silicates. They are naturally found in sedimentary and volcanic rocks.

Zeolite is a complex mineral formed at the contact of volcanic lava and water. This process can take thousands or even millions of years. Scientists estimate that the first zeolite minerals were formed 300 million years ago.

Traditional medicine recognizes the consumption of clay (geophagy) as a natural method of detoxification. Zeolite has similar properties and traditional uses

Zeolite can bind and remove a wide range of toxins from the human body, drinking water and waste. Tiny cages and surface charges trap heavy metals, natural and chemical poisons, radioactive elements, microbes, metabolic products and more.

For these reasons, it is often used to detoxify heavy metals and other toxins from the body.

Zeolite does everything in the gut without being absorbed, which makes it safe for human use with some notable exceptions (see 'Side effects').

It is effective for

1) Bleeding

Uncontrolled bleeding is the second leading cause of death in serious injuries and accidents.

A mixture containing zeolite and clay (CoolClot) significantly reduced bleeding time at injury. In human blood samples, it enhanced coagulation by 40%

2) Detoxification

Heavy metals

In a clinical trial of 33 volunteers, zeolite enhanced the elimination of aluminum, arsenic, lead, mercury and other heavy metals. People who received liquid zeolite (30 drops per day) had significantly higher levels of these minerals in their urine samples. Laboratory analysis confirmed that the zeolite was not contaminated, attributing the results to heavy metal detoxification.

Cellular studies have confirmed the ability of zeolite to bind and remove heavy metals such as lead, arsenic and mercury.

Brain damage & mood

Brain cells are particularly sensitive to heavy metal poisoning. Heavy metals can damage neurons and cause anxiety, depression, anger and attention problems.

The ability of zeolite to detoxify lead, mercury, aluminum and other heavy metals makes it a promising complementary approach to the aforementioned mood disorders.

Alcohol

In 12 healthy drinks, reduce blood alcohol levels by up to 43%. Inhibit the absorption of alcohol when combined with alcohol.

In another clinical trial, 25 volunteers took zeolite (2.25 g - 4.5 g) in the morning after a "late night out" too late for alcohol detoxification, but the hangover symptoms improved by 40-50% .

Toxins and fungi

Aflatoxins can contaminate food and endanger human health, especially the liver.

Zeolite was able to detoxify chickens from aflatoxin and protect their liver, bile duct and kidneys. Immune system organs such as the thymus gland were also less damaged.

In cows, zeolite reduced aflatoxin levels in their milk, which is a major source of human poisoning. In test tubes, zeolite could remove aflatoxin from water (60%) and feed (80%).

Radioactive elements

The porous structure of zeolite is a perfect trap for large radioactive elements. In rats and sheep, clinoptilolite inhibited the absorption of radioactive cesium and reduced its concentration in animal organs.

Other toxins

Nitrates are toxins that can contaminate drinking water and disrupt human and animal health. In cows, zeolite reverses the metabolic damage caused by nitrates.

In addition, it detoxified rats from organophosphates (nerve poisons). The fact that some pesticides belong to this group reveals the importance of zeolite detoxification properties.

3) Intestinal health

"Intestinal leakage" means that toxins, germs and inflammatory molecules can leak from the intestine into the bloodstream. This can cause fatigue, autoimmune diseases, depression and more.

In a clinical trial of 52 endurance athletes, zeolite (1.85 g daily for 12 weeks) tightened the intestinal wall and prevented leakage. It also had a mild anti-inflammatory effect on the gut.

Accumulation of urea, ammonia and gas in the gut can lead to ulcerative colitis, IBS and even colon cancer. High blood urea levels (uremia) can be life threatening. Zeolite binds both urea as well as ammonia, offering potential protection against these intestinal toxins.

4) Intestinal microbiome

The positive effect of zeolite on intestinal bacteria contributes to the above benefits but also helps relieve diarrhea and improves overall health.

Cuban doctors have developed a drug for diarrhea (Enterex) made from clinoptilolite. They proved its safety and effectiveness in 4 clinical trials and additional cell experiments. The ability of zeolite to restore healthy gut flora played a key role in this effect.

In cellular studies, zeolite inhibited the growth of 2 viral strains (coxsackie virus and sonic virus) that infect us through the gut.

Zeolite can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses.

5) Oxidative damage

Smoking poisons the whole body and increases the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Oxidative stress plays a key role in the negative effects of smoking.

In a clinical trial in 85 smokers, clinoptilolite (5.4 g daily for 1 month) potentiated the antioxidant defense, similar to vitamin E.

Enhanced antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, peroxide dismutase-SOD)

Increased total antioxidant capacity

Protects organs from injury

The ability of zeolite to bind to toxins can play a role in combating oxidative stress.

6) Can relieve acid reflux and stomach ulcers

In a clinical trial in 25 people with GERD, clinoptilolite (1.5 g daily for 2 weeks) relieved heartburn, pain and discomfort by 45-55%.

The same protocol protects another 23 patients from stomach ulcers caused by a common NSAID, naproxen.

Insufficient data for

The following supposed benefits are supported only by limited, low quality clinical trials. There is insufficient evidence to support the use of zeolite for any of the uses listed below. Remember to talk to a doctor before using zeolite and never use it in the position recommended or prescribed by your doctor.

7) Oral hygiene

In 11 volunteers, a silver-zeolite mouthwash (zeolite filled with silver ions) significantly reduced dental plaque formation.

In a cell study, silver zeolite cut off the development of candida and acid production, two major causes of dental plaque and oral infections.

In addition, zeolite can eliminate volatile odors and thus fight bad breath.

8) Liver protection

The antioxidant power of zeolite can be vital to protecting the liver.

In a cell study, zeolite reversed the harmful effects on the liver of adriamycin, an anti-cancer drug. Suppresses inflammatory proteins (NF-κB, TNF-alpha and IL-1B) and prevents cell death.

Zeolite also protects against aflatoxins that damage the liver.

The antioxidant activity of zeolite and its ability to bind toxins can play a role in liver health.

10) Benefits of zeolite for the skin

Due to its detoxification and antibacterial properties, zeolite can benefit the skin in different ways. Many therapeutic and personal care products have zeolite as their main ingredient.

9) Personal care

In a clinical trial of 39 volunteers, deodorant spray with 10% silver-zeolite showed a strong and lasting (24 hours) effect on armpit germs, which produce unpleasant odors. A spray with a control substance failed to do so [78].

In cellular studies, zeolite eliminated viruses and volatile odors. Stop the growth of HSV-1 (Herpes simplex) virus, which causes herpes.

Zeolite forms a protective film on the skin, acting as a natural sunscreen. In a cell study, zeolite even reverses oxidative damage caused by another sunscreen ingredient, titanium dioxide.

Cancer Research

The findings discussed below come from animal and cell studies. They should guide further research, but should not be interpreted as supporting human anticancer effects until more research is done. Zeolite supplements have not been approved for the prevention or treatment of cancer [82].

According to a review of studies in animals with different types of cancer, zeolite can:

Shrink tumors and prevent them from growing

Improve overall health and extend life

Enhance the effects of chemotherapy

Both oral and skin treatments have shown the above benefits.

Clinoptilolite reduced the number of melanoma (skin cancer) metastases in mice and boosted their immune response.

In cellular studies, zeolite loaded with anticancer drug (5-fluorouracil) was able to kill stomach and colon cancer cells. The addition of zeolite enhanced the effectiveness of this drug.

The ability of zeolite to bind radioactive elements, fungal toxins and other cancer-causing substances also makes it a promising candidate for future cancer research.

There is currently not enough evidence to recommend zeolite for the prevention or treatment of cancer, but research is ongoing.

Zeolite side effects

The list of side effects below is not exhaustive and you should consult your doctor about other possible side effects, depending on your health condition and other factors.

In clinical trials, zeolite did not cause significant side effects.

A safety review also found no hazards associated with zeolite consumption. That said, tests in humans and animals have shown that it can cause inflammation and damage to the lungs when inhaled.

IMPORTANT: Only certain types of natural zeolite are suitable for human consumption.

No studies have confirmed the safety of zeolite in children, pregnant or breastfeeding women. These teams may want to avoid it just in case.

Food and drug interactions

Medicines

Supplement-drug interactions can be dangerous and, in rare cases, even life-threatening. Always consult your doctor before completing and informing him / her about all the medicines and supplements you use or test.

Be careful not to mix zeolite with drugs or supplements.

Zeolite could potentially bind to and disable prescription drugs. Therefore, it should not be combined with any medicine.

Use

As mentioned, zeolite is a common ingredient in personal care products, such as:

Soaps

Face masks

Body exfoliation

Toothpaste
