Citronella oil is an essential oil obtained from the leaves and stems of Cymbopogon nardus (lemongrass). The oil is widely used as a source of chemical fragrances such as citronellal, citronellol and geraniol.

These chemicals are widely used in the soap, wax and incense, perfume, cosmetics and fragrances industries worldwide.

Citronella oil is also a plant repellent and the United States Environmental Protection Agency considers citronella oil to be non-toxic biocidal.

The main producers are China and Indonesia - they produce 40% of the world supply.

Oil is also produced in Taiwan, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Sri Lanka, India, Argentina, Ecuador, Jamaica, Madagascar, Mexico and South Africa.

Properties :

Citronella oil is popular as a natural insect repellent.

Its repellent mosquito repellent properties have been verified by research, including its effectiveness in repelling Aedes aegypti (dengue mosquito).

To be consistently effective, most citronella repellent formulas need to be reapplied to the skin every 30-60 minutes.

Lemongrass oil is an effective repellent for body lice, head lice and persistent flies,

It is also used to sterilize kitchen counters.

Lemongrass oil has little or no toxicity when used as a local insect repellent.

Essential oils are not drinkable.

Citronella essential oil is never used directly on the skin, as it is toxic and can cause a severe allergic reaction.

They should always be diluted in base oil (almond, coconut).
